Woodbury Earth Day: 23 and Counting

April 20th, 1996: It’s early morning and we’re setting up tables in the parking lot for New Morning’s B-Earthday Celebration. It wasn’t evident at the time that the simple sincere notion to bring the local community together to learn and share would evolve into the annual Woodbury Earth Day Festival.  Now located in the beautiful Hollow Park in Woodbury and hosted by the Pomperaug River Watershed Coalition, the 2018 event will feature over 130  vendors, as well as entertainment, activities, and demonstrations for children and adults. The core purpose of the event is to bring people together in the spirit of environmental awareness while supporting the local economy.

New Morning originally launched the community-focused Earth Day Celebration to help communicate the major impact that agriculture has on our environment and to share how each of us can positively impact our local and global environment.  We invited product vendors, local farmers, environmental groups, wellness practitioners, and community organizations to join us for a day of education, sampling, and fun activities for the whole family. Attendees could try new foods, pet a baby goat from a nearby farm, join a drum circle, or witness a weaving or yoga demonstration.

Each year drew more vendors and activities, transforming New Morning’s parking lot into an “eco-village” of tents, and attracting more and more attendees from near and far – some years had upwards of 5,000 (that’s more than half the population of Woodbury)!

Eventually, Earth Day had outgrown its original locale and had also come to be recognized as a community service. In 2010, the Woodbury Earthday Committee, in collaboration with the Woodbury Business and Economic Development Committee, held the event at Hollow Park on a beautiful sunny spring day. A few years later the baton was passed to the Pomperaug River Watershed Coalition, who now hosts and plans the festival.

New Morning will be celebrating both at the Hollow and the store!  On Saturday April 21st from 11am-4pm, you’ll find our store bustling with vendors offering tastings and customers curious to discover new products that they can feel good about. You can also visit us at our tent at Hollow Park in Woodbury!  Hope to see you there.
