Goodbye to Plastic Bags

Don’t forget to bring your reusable bags when you shop!

As of August 1st, 2019, New Morning Market will no longer offer single-use plastic grocery bags at checkout. Our decision to drop plastic grocery bags coincides with the State of Connecticut’s new tax on single-use plastic bags. As of August 1st, the state will charge a $0.10 fee per single-use plastic bag to customers. The tax will be effective until June 30, 2021. From there on out, single-use plastic checkout bags will be banned within the state.

This effort also falls in line with New Morning’s commitment to sustainability. One billion plastic bags are used in Connecticut each year, with the average American family taking home almost 15,000 plastic bags a year! The New York State Plastic Bag Task Force concluded that more than 100,000 single-use plastic bags end up in Long Island Sound annually. Our hope is that our decision to discontinue single-use plastic checkout bags helps reduce the impact of plastic pollution. In the future, New Morning Market will continue to seek out and enact more solutions for single-use plastic in-store.
