Products I LOVE
| So Delicious Greek Style Cultured Coconut Milk |
This dairy free, soy free, gluten free vegan coconut “yogurt” is creamy, thick and filled with six active live cultures that promote healthy digestion. Although low in protein (one 6-oz serving has a mere 2 grams) it is very high in soluble fiber (8-9 g per serving, depending on the flavor-- or 32-36% of the DRI for fiber). The fiber it contains is from chicory root, pectin, guar gum, locust bean gum and algin (kelp extract)—a blend that surely benefits digestion and may also help to lower cholesterol. Although moderately high in saturated fat (4.5-6 g per serving) this fat is from coconut milk—a rich source of medium chain triglycerides (MCTs). MCTs are beneficial to the immune system and are non-atherogenic. Fortified with substantial amounts of calcium, vitamin B12, magnesium and vitamin D, this is a good choice for anyone following a vegan diet or who has food allergies or sensitivities to milk. I love that the plain flavor has only a scant 7 grams of sugar (chocolate flavor has 11 grams and vanilla 12 grams). Available in chocolate, vanilla and plain (my favorite—the plain tastes like coconut!) this product is sure to be a new favorite.
Black garlic, one of the latest food trends, is a form of garlic that is much milder tasting and less pungent than regular garlic but twice as high in antioxidants and cancer preventive compounds, such as s-allycysteine. Black garlic is made from regular white garlic through a month long process of fermentation under controlled levels of high heat and humidity. During this process, antioxidants are increased and the black color is produced as the compound melanoidin is formed. Black garlic is sweet and smoky with a soft jelly-like texture and virtually no garlic odor. It can be eaten straight out of the package, spread onto crackers ( I love it with goat cheese!) or added to any dish where you would use regular garlic. At New Morning, we are now proud to carry packages of Blue Fortune Farm’s Black Garlic in our produce section.
The Provender at New Morning has some really great-tasting, nutrient-packed finds! I love the “forbidden rice salad”. It can be served cold or hot and is loaded with the same powerful anti-oxidants that are found in blueberries. Forbidden rice, a black rice variety is also a low -glycemic, gluten-free grain. The lightly cooked, oil-dressed “simply carrots” are one of my staples at lunch time. Carrots and other deep yellow-orange veggies contain fat-soluble carotenoids which are better absorbed by the body when cooked with a little oil. The “Egyptian chicken” is another favorite for both lunch and dinner. Here, Chef Carol artfully combines lentils, chicken, almonds, rice and spices such as turmeric into a fabulous dish that is as good for you as it tastes! There is “quinoa with butternut squash”, a medley of spinach, squash, quinoa and pumpkin seeds. If you haven’t yet tried quinoa, this salad is the best introduction to this high-protein, gluten-free food that I know of! Finally, I can’t leave out the “raw kale salad”. Once you try this crunchy, tangy flavor-packed salad, you will be hooked! Raw kale is loaded with vitamin K for healthy bones, lutein for your eyes, calcium, fiber, and important sulfur-containing compounds which are cancer preventive. Bon Appetit!

| Viv Agave Organic Blue Agave Inulin | Viv Agave is pure inulin powder, a natural soluble fiber derived from the agave plant--- the same plant from which tequila is made. Inulin is also known as F.O.S. — fructooligosaccharides. While not as sweet tasting as sugar, inulin has no bitter after taste and has several health benefits. Inulin can be used as a low glycemic, non-insulemic sweetener in place of sugar in beverages and foods. This product is very beneficial for those who are trying to lose weight and manage their blood sugar. The beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract feed on inulin, which is why it is also known as a “pre-biotic”. Inulin promotes the growth of the good bacteria (bifidobacteria) and aids calcium / magnesium absorption. You might find inulin added to some commercial yogurts, due to its ability to enhance mineral absorption. Viv Agave is gluten free, 100% organic and kosher. One tablespoon of inulin powder has 40 calories, 0g sugar and 10g soluble fiber.
| Zocalo Gourmet Heritage Flours |
If you have not yet had the opportunity to try the Zocalo Gourmet Heritage Flours (Lima Bean, Kaniwa, Sweet Potato and Purple Corn), I invite you to become better acquainted. These gluten-free Peruvian flours will add some nutrition and interest to your diet, as you support sustainable farming practices and promote biodiversity with your purchase. The lima bean flour is a good source of protein, iron and fiber. It can be added to other gluten-free flour mixtures without imparting a strong “bean-y” taste. Kaniwa is a close relative to quinoa. It adds protein and fiber to baked goods. Try sweet potato flour for great cookies, pie crusts and crepes. It is high in iron, vitamin A and calcium. Studies show that sweet potatoes can also help to stabilize blood sugar. Purple corn flour contains potent antioxidants similar to those found in blueberries. It can be used as a substitute for yellow corn meal. All Zocalo Gourmet Heritage Flours are naturally free of soy, wheat, gluten, dairy and any genetically modified ingredients. These are authentic native foods created by small community-based producers in Peru.
