1. Visit my friends at The Natural Princess and read my article on tomatoes! http://www.thenaturalprincess.com/nutrition.html

2. Keeping Tabs on Vitamin B Advised with Metformin (CME/CE)
The association of metformin treatment with vitamin B12 deficiency was confirmed in a long-term trial, suggesting that diabetic patients receiving the popular drug would benefit from vitamin monitoring and perhaps B12 supplementation. With 4.3 years... full story http://www.medpagetoday.com/Endocrinology/Diabetes/tb/20220

3. Noncardiac Benefits of Statins Found Lacking (CME/CE)
Claims of unintended benefits of statins appear to be largely unsubstantiated and known risks -- including liver and renal problems and myopathy -- confirmed, British researchers concluded based on findings from a large prospective open cohort study.... full story http://www.medpagetoday.com/Cardiology/Atherosclerosis/tb/20232

1. Between 25% and 30% of overweight and obese children had symptoms consistent with GERD. That contrasts with previous evidence suggesting a GERD prevalence of 3% to 5% among children (Arch Pediatr Adolescent Med 2000; 154: 150-54).

Comment: Obesity causes GERD because extra weight puts pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter (LES).  Poor eating habits are also associated with having GERD (eating the wrong foods too fast, too much, too late, etc).  Medications that treat GERD impair the body’s ability to absorb calcium, B12, protein and other nutrients that are essential to growing children.  Some prescription medications may also contribute to colitis.  This is really tragic!  What will happen to these children, who are malnourished and overfed, then given prescription medications that exacerbate health problems associated with nutrient deficiencies? Will these children grow up to develop osteoporosis in their twenties and thirties?  Will they suffer from a B12 deficiency- related depression, only to be given more drugs?  Our children desperately need to be taught proper nutrition and to learn to maintain a normal weight. There is no reason why any child should have to be on the “purple pill”!

2.  Women, who supplemented with zinc demonstrated reductions in anger and hostility and improvements in mood compared to those women who did not supplement with zinc.

Comment: This study used only an additional 7 mg of zinc daily to get an effect.  There is a very simple in-office test to determine if you are sufficient for zinc.  Ask me how.

3. A new study on children’s willingness to eat fruit indicates that they are prepared to eat twice as much when it is visually appealing; findings that could help inform food producers’ strategies as well as parents’.

4. Dietary sugars may be affecting cholesterol levels
JAMA  2010, Volume 303, Issue 15, Pages 1490-1497
“Caloric Sweetener Consumption and Dyslipidemia Among US Adults”
Authors: J.A. Welsh, A. Sharma, J.L. Abramson, V. Vaccarino, C. Gillespie, M.B. Vos

Comment: This is the first study of its kind to link higher intakes of added sugar in the diet to increased risk factors for cardiovascular disease such as lower HDL- cholesterol levels, higher triglyceride levels and higher ratios of triglycerides to HDL-cholesterol.  A heart- healthy diet is so much more than just “low in saturated fat and cholesterol”.  It is a diet rich in monounsaturated fats found in olives, nuts and avocados.  It is high in fiber, rich in protective anti-oxidants found in fresh produce and spices.  It is also low in added sugars.  The average American consumes 22 teaspoons per day of added sugars.  Over 1/3 of this sugar comes from soft drinks.
