Hidden GMO's

Gene-splicing is the technique used to create Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).  To produce desired traits in an organism, Biotechnologists insert genes from any species into the DNA of plants, animals, bacteria, and viruses (think: fly genes in tomatoes). Traditional methods for hybridizing or crossbreeding do not combine DNA from different species.  Surprisingly, GMOs are not in commercial production for nutritional superiority, increased yields or drought tolerance.  In fact, 75% of GMO crops are specifically bred for herbicide tolerance (e.g. “Roundup Ready” crops).

Is it safe to eat genetically modified food?  Who knows?  Long-term, third party studies have yet to be conducted. More than 30 countries have restrictions, mandatory labeling or bans on genetically modified food, but the United States isn’t one of them.  Because GMOs have no labeling requirements, they have been silently infiltrating our food supply for over 15 years.  It’s estimated that GMOs are present in at least 80% of packaged foods.  In addition to the unknown health implications, there are ethical and environmental concerns that must be considered

The Non-GMO Project is a non-profit collaborative effort, started by a group of natural retailers in the U.S. and Canada to offer consumers consistent non-GMO choices for organic and natural products and information regarding the risks associated with GMO products. The Non-GMO Project has created a 3rd party, verification program that began enrolling products in the Fall of 2008.

At New Morning, we’ve signed on as a supporting retailer of the Non-GMO Project.  While the safety of GMOs remains uncertain, one thing is clear: you have the right to know where your food comes from and what’s in it.  We think the third party labeling system will help you to make educated food choices.

Look for “Non-GMO Project Verified” on some of the products in the store.  New Morning participated in Non-GMO Day on 10/10/2010, with 5% of the day’s sales going to support the Non-GMO Project.  If you have any questions, keep checking back here - we will be adding new information as it comes in OR you can always just stop by and ask us!
