Donate a Digital Camera and Save Hundreds of Lives
New Morning Market is asking the public to donate working digital cameras all month long, which they will send to a non-profit organization called S.T.I.C.K.S. (Supplying Technology in County Kill Shelters) in Asheville, NC.
S.T.I.C.K.S. distributes the cameras to rural high kill shelters, where staff and volunteers can photograph at-risk animals, and post the images where rescuers and potential adopters can see the animals, and take action to save them. petfinder.com petharbor.com & pets911.org are common places these photos may be posted. Customers may also view pictures at New Morning Market throughout the month.
"For many rescuers around the country it all starts with a simple photo. It’s the photo that drives the rescuer to go to lengths that sometimes seem insurmountable," says New Morning's owner John Pittari. "Without a photo, animals have little to no chance of getting out of these places alive."
John and his wife Jane rescued their dog Millie (pictured above), and they say they know how satisfying it feels to save the life of a desperate animal. (see her story below)
From January through February, New Morning is asking the community to bring new or used digital cameras, memory cards, USB cables, rechargeable batteries and camera chargers into the store at 738 Main Street South in Woodbury. All donations must be in good working condition.
The value of your donation is tax deductable, as defined by IRS Laws. A receipt will be issued for all used cameras as long as they are in working condition.
"Monetary donations are also being accepted" says New Morning's General Manger Pat Rector. "We use the money donated to purchase batteries, chargers and memory cards needed for donated cameras as well as new cameras, so every dollar goes directly to the cause." Millie’s Story
When John and Jane Pittari were hiking in New Hampshire a few years ago, they met a couple with the cutest little Boston Terrier/Jack Russell mix you've ever seen - sweet and calm (although she had just climbed down a mountain and was probably tired.) She melted their hearts. The owners said there was still a puppy from that litter available on PetFinder.com, so as soon as the Pittari’s got home, Jane looked her up. She was being fostered in northern Maine. Having just returned from NH, they could not get back up to Maine. But the puppy's bio said the mother was being fostered in East Haven, CT. Apparently, she had been abandoned in Kansas by people who walked away from their home and left her in it. She had a litter of 6 puppies while in there. People going by the house heard the puppies and someone was able to go in and get them all out. All survived and thanks to Friends of Homeless Animals, have been adopted. Jane called and arranged to meet the foster mom and mama dog at a parking lot halfway between their homes. As she drove in, Jane saw this sweet face peeking up and looking out the window and that was it. It was a Monday and after much frantic effort, by Friday she was with her new home at the Pittari’s. They changed her name from Bonnie to Millie and the rest is history. She now queen of the back offices at New Morning. |
