The Book Nook - by Jane Pittari Summer Reading
“eaarth : Making a Life on a Tough New Planet” by Bill McKibben 2010 by Times Books eaarth is on my summer reading list. I’m psyching myself up to it with Doug Fine’s “Farewell, My Subaru”, a light-hearted look at getting off the grid. But “eaarth” will not be a light-hearted read. Having warned us 20 years ago about climate change in “The End of Nature”, McKibbon claims that we’re now past the turn back point and had better prepare ourselves for life in this irreversibly changed world. This book may require some dry Pinot Grigio to get through.
“Food Rules : An Eater’s Manual” by Michael Pollan 2009 by Penguin Books This book is an easy read, easy to understand and in small chunks you can cover while waiting for kids to be done at one activity or another. Pollan’s recommendations are sensible and doable, like if your grandmother wouldn’t recognize it as food, don’t eat it. It’s also a great bathroom book.
“Venus on Fire, Mars on Ice” by John Gray, PhD 2010 by Mind Publishing Featured on Oprah, this book deals with how our changing hormones effect our relationships and talks about how nutrition (superfoods and properly managing our sugar levels) can offer some relief. It’s not exactly a novel, but dealing with the eternal saga of the relationship between women and men.
These books, and many more, are available for purchase here at New Morning!
