All Things Cheese and Wine. Thursday, November 6th 6-8:00 pm
Thanks to all who joined us! (And you were many) Woodbury Library was HOPPING for the 6th Annual Wine and Cheese tasting, hosted by New Morning on Thursday evening, November 6. Even if, it was only two days post election. The room filed with people from many area towns out for an early holiday affair. Did you know that the New Morning Wine and Cheese event has become an unofficial kick-off for the holidays? It’s also an opportunity for the community to come together, enjoy one another’s company and try new selections harvested from local producers. What better way to celebrate than enjoying local foods and wine with neighbors! Once again, many loyal New Morning staff worked many hours to put it together and it showed.
This year’s added benefits included both delightful new regional chevres, and representatives from the farms as well. Nettle Meadow Farm’s Cheese Maker, Sheila Flanagan and her associate traveled from Thurman NY, to share their award-winning goat cheeses, including a creamy honey lavender to die for. The flavors were very mild (decidedly unlike some other goat cheeses this writer has tasted)-Sheila maintains it’s partly due to a great goat diet (We eat what they eat, and they eat well!) and also that the cheese is made as little as 3 hours after milking). Look for some of these award-winning cheeses in the store very soon-they were favorites! This farm treats its goats as family and it shows in the quality of the products they brought to the event.
Ira Grabel sampled his Berkshire Blue, an internationally acclaimed cheese made in Berkshire County from whole Jersey milk. (The best, and richest milk cows make- Jersey milk has consistently high butterfat, calcium and protein contents). Ira took great interest in educating people about the importance of healthy, happy cows and their meticulous, handmade cheese process. The proof is in the awards- as in repeat awards from the International Slow Foods Festival. Your holiday guests will be eating this cheese out of your hands.
Diligent work by New Morning’s Gourmet Specialties and Cheese Buyer, Wendy Westcott, rewarded guests with an incredible selection of cheeses, graciously donated by NY’s Coach Farm, Grafton Dairy and West River Creamery from Vermont, and Brovetto Farm of Jefferson, NY. We’d be remiss in not mentioning the fabulous smoked specialties from Grindstone Neck, a family owned business in ME, known for their salmon and cheddar spreads.
