Music
A Celebrated Trio of area and internationally acclaimed musicians will perform a repertoire of the music of northern Mali and Niger, with elements of the blues, and tunes from such far flung zones as Zimbabwe and Madagascar.
Abdoulaye Alhassane was guitarist and musical director for one of the most dazzling roots bands West Africa has produced, Mamar Kassey of Niger. Born in Niger to a Songhai family from Gao, Mali, Abdoulaye learned to play many instruments as a boy, both traditional and modern. With Mamar Kassey, he forged a unique vision of harmonizing tradition and modernity. Using Now based in New York, Abdoulaye has created his own group, the Sahara Band, versed in all the many styles he has admired and performed, from the acoustic guitar picking of Ali Farka Toure, to traditions from the Songhai, Fula, Hausa and other peoples, to his own diverse compositions.
Banning Eyre has played guitar professionally since the mid '70s, working in genres as diverse as jazz, flamenco, dance-rock and reggae. For the past fifteen years, he has specialized in guitar styles from Africa, playing in a series of Congolese soukous bands in Boston, with West African musicians such as Alhassane in New York, and with Timbila, a group that performs traditional music from Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Eyre has performed with The Super Rail Band of Bamako and Sali Sidibe in Mali, Wendo Kolosoy of the Congo, and with Thomas Mapfumo and The Blacks Unlimited in Zimbabwe. He plays on selected tracks from six Thomas Mapfumo albums, and on a track on Taj Mahal and Toumani Diabate’s Kulanjan (Hannibal 1999), which was voted Folk Roots “Album of the Year” in the UK.
Dirck Westervelt plays bass, banjo, keyboards and guitar in styles ranging from jazz and rock to zydeco, old time, and African music. He has joined Eyre on two African musical journeys, first to Mali where he explored the roots of the banjo, and then to Zimbabwe, where both musicians learned to play Shona roots pop music. Westervelt plays with Eyre in Timbila and with a number of West African musicians in New York, including Abdoulaye Alhassane.
