New Morning supports Safe Haven and the good work that it does to help those
in need. As in the past, we will donate 100% of your $5.00 contribution to Safe Haven, in addition to matching the total donations for the event.  We'd like to thank all New Morning staff, vendors and performers, who  generously donate their time and talent for this event.

Ice Cream Social 2006 - It rained and poured.

New Morning’s 7th annual ice cream social did not disappoint.  The proceeds, which benefit Safe Haven, a center for victims of domestic violence located in Southbury and Waterbury, just exceeded last year’s take. This was totally amazing since we know (on good authority), it rained within ½ hour of starting at 4:00 and until just before the very end 7:00 pm. In between, it hailed, so guests were very grateful for the protection of the tent and store overhang. The great photos, taken by employee and resident photographer, Kimberly Bouton, are a testimony to her ingenuity because she managed to shoot during a very brief dry period. Check out the photos, you won’t see a drop of rain anywhere!

Special thanks to our star performer, Becca Anderson, whose beautiful voice entertained throughout the

downpour- Becca graciously donated her time, performing old favorites and original work, accompanied by her faithful guitar. Becca has performed all over the United States and Canada. For more about Becca, please visit: (http://www.beccaanderson.com/)

Many others donated their time and services to the event, including New Morning employees, and Store vendors. Rosetta and Byron of Mind/Body Works, donated a free massage. Ice cream sundae supplies were donated by United Natural Foods,  and Dagoba Chocolate. This year, we were especially thrilled to showcase a local Connecticut dairy. Beaver Brook, an independent family –owned farm in Lyme, graciously donated some of their choice gelatos: Mango, Chocolate, Lime, Pistachio and others. For more about the generous sheep, cows and people who live at Beaver Brook: www.beaverbrookfarm.com.

The Ice Cream Social is an opportunity for people to donate personal care items and non-perishables, collected throughout June and delivered to Safe Haven after the event. This year, New Morning aesthetician, Jeanette Mento, pulled in almost $1,000 worth of health and beauty products and, along with store customers, filled the front store window with free supplies for this worthy cause. New Morning matches and donates 100% of the cash proceeds to the shelter.

Safe Haven can use your assistance all year round! If you didn’t get a chance to come this year, look for us next June. In the meantime, gift cards, new clothing and personal care products are always welcome. Safe Haven offers free supportive services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault from the Southbury and greater Woodbury areas. The following
statistics about this form of abuse gave us pause. We hope they give you a reason to be generous. Thank you!

1. Every 15 seconds a woman is battered in the U.S.
2. Battering is the single greatest cause of injury to women in the United States.
3. In one out of six marriages in the U.S., there is a pattern of abuse.
4. Nearly one-fourth of American women will be abused by a current or former partner at some point in their lives.
5. Sixty percent of battered women are beaten while they are pregnant.
6. At least 70% of men who batter their wives sexually or physically abuse their children.
