Be Part Of The Solution Ecosystems in Connecticut have changed dramatically since the last glacier retreated 12,000 years ago. Over time the barren landscape left behind became re-vegetated and populated. A delicate balance evolved within the natural communities of flora and fauna. Earth is now experiencing another rapid change in climate, one that some weather models predict to be as drastic as the last glacier. One effect, verified by the Cornell Ornithology Lab, is that migratory birds are arriving to our area earlier. Since flowers, seeds, insects and other organisms respond differently to the changing weather variables brought on by global warming, the optimal survival conditions that birds have relied on for millennia may not be available when they arrive. This can result in the starvation of the migrant birds and their offspring.Since 1905, the Earth’s surface temperature has risen by about 1 degree Fahrenheit - the last ten years being the hottest. It is the rapid climate change that is outpacing our ecosystems ability to adjust, resulting in a net loss of habitats. |
